《白華のあと、私たちのあしもとに眠る鯨を呼び覚ます》は、愛知で起きてきた人と鯨類のさまざまな関わりを辿ることから始まりました。

伊勢湾や三河湾で行われた捕鯨の歴史、日本の発展を地下で支えてきた「土管」製造と捕鯨の意外な関わり、そして今も愛知の海を訪れ続ける鯨類のこと。驚きとともに多くの発見がありました。

愛知の歴史の中で、人と鯨の関係は大きな変化を遂げてきました。かつてここにいた鯨の、見えなくなったその姿に出会い直せたら——それは過去から現在へ、鯨と人、海と人の関係を編みなおす入り口をひらいていく。そんな思いを抱きつつ取り組んできた作品です。

My installation for the Triennale, “After Efflorescence: Awakening the Whale Beneath Us,” began by tracing various relationships woven between people and cetaceans in Aichi.

The history of whaling in Ise Bay and Mikawa Bay, the unexpected connection between whaling and clay pipe manufacturing, which was the industry that supported Japan’s development underground, and case studies of cetaceans swimming to the shores of Aichi. Many surprising stories gave me new insights.

Throughout the history of Aichi, the relationship between people and whales has undergone significant change. The whale was once here and has vanished. If I could revive the whale in my artistic practice, we may find the threshold that reweaves the relationships between whales and us, and the sea and us.
