札幌市にある北海道文化財団アートスペースにて、是恒さくら展「The warp and woof of a whale of a tale－経緯、その鯨ほどの余白」を開催します。

今回紹介するのは、一年間のノルウェー滞在中に取り組み始めた作品群です。
個展の開催は久しぶりです。個展をひらくことは、自分が探究·表現を続けていく途上、終わらない道の上で「現在地」を標として形にしていくことなのだなと思います。振り返ると過去3年間の2回の個展も北海道内で開催したので、今回の展示に向けて、旅の後の一つの標のような気持ちを抱いています。

「The warp and woof of a whale of a tale
経緯、その鯨ほどの余白」
 
鯨にまつわる記憶を尋ね各地を旅してきました。日々の暮らしの中からはるか遠くの海まで、さまざまに語られる鯨と人の事象を言葉と刺繍で表現しています。土地により時代により異なり、移ろう鯨と人の関わり。その接点から生じる風景の重なりを探っています。

苫小牧市で過ごした日々、1970年代の苫小牧市東部の開発計画により住民が立ち退いた「弁天」という地区に関心を持ちました。今は訪れる人も稀で、水鳥が飛来する弁天沼は静かに水をたたえ、湿原らしい風景が広がります。約半世紀前、弁天沼へ向かう道の途中に「鯨の骨の門」があったという話を聞きました。「象牙のような白く丸い骨が二本、道の両脇に向かい合わせに立っていた。大きい方の骨は3メートルくらい、小さい方の骨は2メートルくらい。鯨の骨の門は牧場の祠に向かう道にあった」と。

鯨の骨の門とは、なんだったのだろう。捕鯨に関わる土地を訪れる中で、なめらかな弓形の鯨のあごの骨、あるいは肋骨2本を一対として奉納した「鯨の骨の鳥居」を目にしました。数十年ごとに建て直されているものもあれば、すでに朽ちて失われたものも。2022年秋から2023年まで一年間滞在したノルウェーでは、捕鯨の歴史のある町で「鯨の骨のアーチ」を見かけました。町のシンボルとして、捕鯨の港のシンボルとして、そして王の訪問を記念して、鯨のあごの骨や肋骨を用いてアーチが立てられていました。

20世紀初頭、ノルウェーから捕鯨の新技術を導入した日本ではノルウェー人の捕鯨船船長と銛を撃つ砲手が活躍しました。ノルウェーで過ごした日々、私はかつて日本で暮らした捕鯨船船長の子孫を訪ねました。ノルウェー人船長・砲手とその家族が過ごした時代の日本の風景がモノクロ写真の中に収められていました。マッコウクジラの歯の彫り物や鯨のヒゲ板に絵を描いた工芸など、捕鯨船乗りたちは日本でもノルウェーでもよく似たものを作っていました。

ある土地、ある時代の忘れられない風景や、懐かしさを内包する品々。それらはどのように形となったのだろう。今、眼前にあるもの、日常的に見ているものの中にも、その経緯がわからなくなってしまったものはあるのでしょう。

昔日を知る人々の言葉を織り直していくことで、見えてくるものがあるかもしれない。そんな思いから、ノルウェーと日本に残された捕鯨の記憶を探してきました。日本各地の捕鯨の町で暮らした人々が記した日本語の随筆の中に、ある時代をともにしたノルウェー人捕鯨船船長、砲手や船員たちの様子が記されています。その中には、ノルウェーに暮らす船長や砲手の子孫たちに知られていなかった話もありました。

本展では、日本とノルウェーの個々人による文章を集め、翻訳し、刺繍絵として表現した作品群を紹介します。経糸と緯糸のように遠く離れた記憶を織り交ぜ、歴史の端切れのような場景を縫い取ります。

I am thrilled to announce my upcoming exhibition "The warp and woof of a whale of a tale" at Hokkaido Arts Foundation Art Space in Sapporo. 

A solo exhibition happens on my endless journey of exploring and expressing as if placing a marker of "where I am."
I started working on the group of embroidery works for this exhibition while I was in Norway from 2022 to 2023.

My two solo exhibitions over the past three years also took place in Hokkaido, so this exhibition in Sapporo is a marker of my long-distance journey.

"The warp and woof of a whale of a tale"
 
I have traveled worldwide and asked people about their memories of whales. From everyday life to out in the sea, whales appear in various stories. I express the diversity of whale-related stories with embroidery and essays or with textiles and text. What whales mean for people and our relation to whales transform from time to time and land to land. Sometimes, stories far apart resemble each other.
 
When I lived in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, I became interested in the area called “Benten.” In the 1970s, residents of Benten moved out because of a development project in the city. Nowadays, it is rare to see someone visiting the area. Benten Pond is hidden behind bushes in the marshland where migratory birds fly in and out. I heard there stood a “whale bone gate” on the road connecting to the pond about half a century ago. Two bow-shaped bones of ivory-white color stood facing each other on either side of the road. The taller bone was about three meters long, and the shorter bone was about two meters long. The whale bone gate stood on the road to the ranch’s shrine.
 
What was the whale bone gate? As I visited towns and places related to whaling, I saw a whale bone “torii” gate dedicated to Shinto shrines. They were pairs of arched jawbones or ribs. When I stayed in Norway for a year, from 2022 to 2023, I saw whale bone arches in towns with a history of whaling. Such arches were erected using whale jawbones or ribs to symbolize the town, to mark the whaling port, and to commemorate the king’s visit.
 
In the early twentieth century, Norwegian whaling captains and gunners worked in Japan, where a new method of whaling was introduced from Norway. During my time in Norway, I visited descendants of whaling captains who went to Japan. Sceneries of Japan in the era were kept in black-and-white photographs captured by a Norwegian whaling captain/gunner. Seaman’s crafts using materials of whales, such as baleen painting and tooth carving, were found among both Japanese and Norwegian whalers and seamen. Interestingly, they are very similar to each other.
 
Things that trigger specific eras and certain memories are around us. How have they come to be? As they blend into an ordinarity of everyday sceneries, the warp and woof of the story behind them may be lost.
 
By reweaving the words and stories of people who know the olden days, we may open a perspective of history. Aiming for this, I have searched for memories of whaling that remain in Norway and Japan. Essays written by people who lived in whaling towns in Japan tell how Norwegian whaling captains, gunners, and crew members worked and lived in Japan. Some of the stories may be known to someone other than the descendants of Norwegian captains and gunners in Norway.
 
In this exhibition, I introduce a group of embroidery works inspired by the collected stories of individuals who lived and experienced the whaling era, coming and going between Norway and Japan. Memories far apart may meet like the weft and woof, and sceneries hidden in history may appear in my stitches.
